European Researchers’ Night — Women & Science
On Friday 30 September, the European Researchers’ Night is organized across Europe, to celebrate and question science. In Forum Groningen, this year’s edition centres on the theme of Women & Science. You are warmly invited to join us! We will present a programme on the theme of Women & Science in which you can listen, join in the dialogue, and take part in quizzes.
Groningen is the city where women have written scientific history, with Aletta Jacobs as the first female student, and Jantina Tammes as the first female professor of the Netherlands. Not to mention that in past years, the UG has consistently seen more women than men defend their PhD. But despite all that, we are not there yet.
Women’s rights are still under pressure, there are still too few women who manage to find their way to the top, and women are far less often the subject of research studies than men. And that while the female perspective is more sorely needed than ever. For it is only with an inclusive and interdisciplinary perspective
that we can effectively address societal challenges such as climate change, digitization, health crises, and how to create a fair society. To stimulate this development, the UG has launched four interdisciplinary Schools. This evening is their first joint initiative.
How do we create a more inclusive perspective on societal challenges? Led by presenter Anna Gimbrère, we will go in search of answers, through dialogue, debate, quizzes, and interactive exhibits. With guests such as Devika Partiman (entrepreneur and social activist at Vote for a Woman), Janka Stoker (Director of In the Lead and Professor of Leadership at the UG), Malvina Nassim (Professor of Computational Linguistics and Society at the UG), and Marlene Bakker (Gronings-language singer-songwriter). This will be followed by drinks, with science exhibits and the opportunity to do some networking.
