After receiving positive advice from the Committee of Deans and the University Council, the Supervisory Board of the University of Groningen has decided to appoint Jouke de Vries, President of the Board of the University, for a second four-year term as from 1 October 2022. De Vries began in his role on 1 October 2018, succeeding Sibrand Poppema.

‘We are delighted that we are able to appoint Jouke de Vries for a second term as President of the Board,’ says Johan Remkes, chair of the Supervisory Board. ‘We consider him the right person to lead the UG in the coming years. Over the past period, De Vries has created a calmer governing situation and is a President with a clear strategic vision. We wish him plenty of success and wisdom.’

Proud

President of the Board, De Vries, is delighted about the decision of the Supervisory Board. ‘I started in 2018, with all sorts of plans and ideas. I am proud of how we have piloted the University together through the pandemic and, at the same time, have succeeded in establishing the new Strategic Plan, “Making Connections”. It is fantastic to see the University of the North and the interdisciplinary Schools now becoming a reality. In addition, the relationship between the Board of the University and the University Council has strongly improved.’

Innovations in teaching

De Vries is looking forward to continuing on this path in the coming years. ‘In addition to implementing our Strategic Plan, new things are coming our way. The Cabinet seems to have enough resources available to strengthen higher education and academic research. I see it as an important task to achieve innovations in teaching in the coming years, as well as to implement lessons from the pandemic.’
