Around the world, one in three women face violence, and in the Netherlands, this percentage even rises to 45%. This is why 25 November has been declared International Day against Violence against Women. In over 90 countries around the world, 25 November marks the first of the 16 Days of Action against violence against women, which ends on 10 December, International Human Rights Day. UN Women, the UN organization for women's rights, coordinates this campaign around the world. Groningen is also participating, in collaboration with the Municipality, women's rights organization Zonta, and women's NGO Soroptimist International.

On 25 November, many buildings and places around the world are lit up in orange, to raise awareness of this issue. In Groningen this year, the Werkmanbridge, the Zuiderdiep, the Poelestraat, and the Academy Building will all light up orange. These are the places where Instagram account @catcallsofgrunn receives the most reports. This account aims to bring violence and intimidation against women on the streets of Groningen into focus. The Groningen opening of Orange the World will take place at these locations. A national event is also being organized.
