Boost to atmosphere and image of Zernike Campus

Upgrade Zernikelaan nearly completed
16 November 2021

After three years of hard work, construction work on the Zernikelaan is almost complete. With the Upgrade Zernikelaan project, the University of Groningen, Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the municipality have invested substantially in the quality of life and traffic safety. This has given the atmosphere and image of Zernike Campus a boost.

Zernike Campus has now become even more a beautiful, vibrant place where campus visitors enjoy spending time, meeting each other and coming up with new ideas.

The area around the Duisenberg pond has undergone a true metamorphosis. The wide boardwalk and park-like layout make it a pleasant place to be. Zernikeplein has been completely renovated and has become a shared space with climate-adaptive flower boxes. On the northern side of Zernikelaan, the roadway has been renewed and a park-like zone created. At the entrance area to the northern ring road and Zonnelaan, the roadway was renewed, bicycle paths widened and traffic lights installed. And finally, at the renovated bus station, with room for six buses, the transition to electric vehicles has been taken into account.

Human scale in the design of public space

"The Upgrade Zernikelaan is one of the first projects in which we have redesigned the public space," says alderman Roeland van der Schaaf. "Where mobility used to be the starting point, this has now shifted to the human scale. Themes such as accessibility and experience have been given a much bigger role."

Final work at Willem-Alexander Sports Centre

At the Willem-Alexander Sports Centre, a grandstand and pannacourt are still being realised. These are the final works, which are expected to start in January 2022. Upgrade Zernikelaan will then be completed.

Zernike Campus Groningen

The Zernike Campus is a dynamic environment where educational institutions and the business community meet. The Upgrade Zernikelaan is a collaboration between the municipality of Groningen, the University of Groningen and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. The work has been carried out by contractor Koninklijke Oosterhof Holman.
