UG comes seventh in global list of sustainable universities
The University of Groningen (UG) holds seventh place in the 2018 UI GreenMetric ranking. This puts the UG four places higher than last year on this list of the most sustainable universities. Wageningen University & Research turns out to be the most sustainable out of around 700 universities. After Wageningen, the UG is the greenest university in the Netherlands.
The UI Green Metric ranking was initiated by Universitas Indonesia to encourage universities to consider sustainability in their policies. For each of the universities, the following criteria were considered: ‘setting and infrastructure’, ‘energy and climate change’, ‘waste’, ‘water’, ‘transportation’ and ‘education’.
UG sustainability policy
The UG has been working for some time to improve the environmental sustainability of not only its research and teaching but also its business operations and renovation and building projects. The ambition of the UG is to be CO2 neutral by 2020. The Green Office coordinates and initiates projects related to sustainability at the University of Groningen.
