Constructive discussions and a joint solution

Statement of the UG regarding the student protest on 6 September 2018
07 September 2018

On Thursday evening, after intensive and constructive discussions with the protesting students from student parties DAG and ROOD (youth organization of the Dutch Socialist Party), consensus was reached on four points, which focus specifically on the long term.

The four points are the following:

  • An agreement on student housing will be drawn up between the Municipality of Groningen, the knowledge institutions and the parties responsible for housing (i.e. housing corporations and investors), to improve the situation regarding student housing in the years to come.

  • The UG will send out a clear signal to the Minister of Education, Culture and Science about the negative effects of the current higher education funding model. Thursday evening, Vice-President of the Board of the University Jan de Jeu signed an opinion piece written by the President of the Board of the VU Amsterdam about the perverse incentives in the current higher education funding model.

  • The UG emphasizes once again that it does not have the ambition to grow in terms of student numbers.

  • Students from Hanze UAC and UG who are now sleeping in tents at the Zernike Campus will be offered free alternative accommodation in a former school at the Metaallaan.
