Healthwise Centre of Expertise and UMCG organise a symposium on expensive medicines

Healthwise Centre of Expertise of the University of Groningen and the University Medical Center Groningen will host a symposium relating to the theme ‘Expensive medicines’ on Wednesday, 31 May. Among others, Wouter Bos, Bart Benraad and Alfred Bein will present their view of drug prices on that occasion. Mr Bos is chairman of the VUmc board, Mr Benraad is a programme manager at the Association of Dutch Health Insurers (Zorgverzekeraars Nederland) and Mr Bein is the general director of Novartis Pharmaceutical Company.

Due to the growing knowledge in the field of health and disease control, the world of medicines is making major steps forward. An increasing amount of both new and improved drugs, offering prospects for patients with severe conditions, are put on the market. At the same time, expenditure on medicines in this country has significantly increased because certain groups of medicines come with hefty price tags. This means that the question from society ‘How do we keep medicines expenditure within the budget?’ is a highly topical issue.

Appropriate solution

At the symposium, a number of prominent speakers from the healthcare sector will draw a comprehensive picture of the issues which our society will be confronted with. Based on their specific skills and expertise, the speakers will furnish a number of solutions to encourage the debate. The impact of politics on the healthcare sector will also be discussed. The aim of the discussion is to provide a frame of reference for solving the issue of too costly medicines.
