Heleen van Balen appointed to UG Supervisory Board

On 1 December 2016, Ms Heleen van Balen was appointed as a member of the Supervisory Board of the University of Groningen by Minister Bussemaker of Education, Culture and Science. Ms van Balen was nominated by the University Council. She has succeeded Agnes Schaafsma as the member with the particular trust of the University Council. Her term will run from 1 December 2016 to 31 November 2020.

Heleen van Balen studied Law at the University of Groningen. She specializes in Strategic Legal Management, Governance, Risk Management and Compliance (GRC), and higher education management and development. Heleen van Balen is the proprietor of Commutatio Group BV and is a lecturer in Leadership and Governance at the Hanze UAS Groningen. Heleen van Balen has extensive experience in governance and management. She is the chair of the Giraffa Network and vice chair of the Groningen Commercial Club. She is also a member of the board of Het Behouden Huys.

Supervisory Board

The Supervisory Board is responsible for the supervision of the governance and management of the University performed by the Board of the University. The Supervisory Board has a chair and four members. In addition to Ms Van Balen, the other members are Mr T.H.J. Joustra (chair), Mr H.D. Post, Mr W. Reehoorn and Ms A.S. Roeters.
