Signing of agreement for University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân
On Wednesday 17 February, an agreement on establishing the University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân and its core activities was signed by the University of Groningen, the municipality of Leeuwarden and the province of Fryslân in the provincial government building in Leeuwarden. The parties have committed to the agreement for a period of at least fifteen years.
Boost
After reaching a draft agreement on 18 September 2015, the parties met today to endorse the official agreement on establishing the University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân. The Campus will comprise a residential college offering a three-year Bachelor’s degree programme, a Master’s college with 10 Master’s degree programmes and a graduate school. The Faculty will start its first new programmes in September 2017 and remain in Leeuwarden for at least 15 years.
The launch of University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân will give the academic climate in Leeuwarden and the economy of Fryslân a huge boost. Six new Master’s programmes are currently in the pipeline and will start during the course of the next 3 years. Over a period of 7 years, University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân is set to grow into a Faculty that will house 1,000 students and 50 PhD candidates.
Location of University of Groningen/CF
There are currently three alternative sites in and around Leeuwarden city centre for building the University of Groningen/CF. The final choice will be announced in due course. The decision to base the new Faculty in the city centre dovetails with plans to make Leeuwarden a livelier and more dynamic city .
Transfer
University of Groningen/Campus Fryslân is continuing the work already carried out by Stichting University Campus Fryslân (UCF). The signing of the agreement also means that the tasks, rights and obligations of UCF have now been officially transferred to the University of Groningen.
