Title: Albime triangles.
Abstract:
It is a tradition in our mathematics department to organize and host
a high school teachers day on a Tuesday shortly before Christmas.
This year the event takes place on December 16th, see
http://www.rug.nl/education/lerarenopleiding/professionalisering/studiedagen/nascholing-wiskunde
for the total program (all lectures there are in Dutch; in particular note the talk by one of the
"wiskundemeisjes", Jeanine Daems, at 2.00 pm).
As part of that program, a reception starts at 4.00 pm, and I propose we all use this to
warm up for our "Christmas Colloquium" which will start 4.15 pm.
The colloquium deals with a mathematical comedy of errors and rejection and re-inventions of the same
mathematical wheel.
However, as is appropriate with Christmas Stories, it does have a happy end.
The mathematical content includes triangles, the ergodic theorem, elliptic integrals and more.
Colloquium coordinators are Prof.dr. A.C.D. van Enter (e-mail : A.C.D.van.Enter@rug.nl) and
Dr. A.V. Kiselev (e-mail:
a.v.kiselev rug.nl
