University of Groningen registers 30,000th enrolment

For the first time in its history, the University of Groningen has reached a record number of 30,000 enrolments. The total number of students currently enrolled in the University of Groningen is 30,041, a rise of 3.2% in relation to 2013. The University’s market share in the Netherlands remains unchanged, and it stays in 3rd position behind the University of Amsterdam (1) and Utrecht University (2). A total of 6,254 students enrolled for the first time.

Large proportion of international students

The number of international students studying in Groningen has continued to rise, from 4,151 to 4,551. At present, 13.2% of the students come from abroad. This figure is 23.6% for international students enrolling for the first time.

President of the Board of the University, Sibrand Poppema, is delighted with this development: ‘The University of Groningen is well and truly on the map, both nationally and internationally. There is a lot of respect for our teaching and research, and this is reflected in the rise in student numbers and our position in international ranking lists. I am proud to welcome even more international students to Groningen; they are an increasingly important factor in the growth of our university.’

30,000th enrolment

David Davies from Wales, a first-year Bachelor’s student of Computing Science, was the 30.000th student to enrol. He was presented with a laptop, a bouquet of flowers and a University jumper by the President of the Board of the University, Sibrand Poppema. David was delighted: ‘I was very surprised when they called me to announce that I was the 30,000th student of the University of Groningen. I am honoured that I am the one to reach this milestone.’

The 25,000th student enrolled on 1 October 2008 and the 20,000th on 1 October 2002.
