Regional newspaper ‘Dagblad van het Noorden’ heads ‘Youth mentally ill’.

04 April 2014

Today, the regional newspaper ‘Dagblad van het Noorden’ heads ‘Youth mentally ill’. Background is a paper that has been published last night in PLoS ONE on use of case because of mental problems by TRAILS adolescents during an almost 10-years’ follow-up. Data show that at age 10/11 20% uses this care, and that this has increased to 32% at age 19. The increase in particular occurs in girls, and most of the care concerns general care like the GP. Social deprivation is strongly associated with use, but much of this association runs via behavioral and emotional problems. These problems have a much stronger association with use of adolescent mental healthcare and social care than with general care. The study does not report on what subsequently happens during the process of care. Several project of C4Youth will provide insight on this issue.
