Title: Convexity theorems for symmetric spaces.

Abstract:

A semisimple symmetric space is a pseudo-Riemannian symmetric space whose group of isometries is a semisimple Lie group.
Examples of symmetric spaces are the Riemannian ones, such as the Euclidean spheres (with positive sectional curvature), the Poincare disc, SL(n,R)/SO(p,q), SO(p+1,q)/SO(p,q), the Sitter space Every semisimple Lie group G is a symmetric space with isometry group G \times G.

In this talk I will discuss a new general convexity theorem for these spaces, which is an appropriate generalization of Kostant's non-linear convexity theorem. This is joint work with my PhD student Dana Balibanu.

I will also give some of the motivation behind this theorem, which is rooted in questions from harmonic analysis.

Colloquium coordinators are Prof.dr. A.C.D. van Enter (e-mail : A.C.D.van.Enter@rug.nl) and Dr. A.V. Kiselev (e-mail: a.v.kiselev rug.nl )
