Tuesday evening saw gymnast Epke Zonderland crowned Sportsman of the Year at the National Sport Gala. The medical student from the University of Groningen and the UMCG became world champion on the horizontal bar earlier this year.
In 2013, Zonderland managed to combine his sport with internships at the UMCG. The world title on the horizontal bar was the crowning glory in an extraordinary hat-trick, after previously winning the titles of European champion (2011) and Olympic champion (2012).
Zonderland also won the Sportsman of the Year award in 2009, 2011 and 2012. This fourth title puts him in the illustrious company of Anton Geesink and Ard Schenk, who all won the award on four occasions too.
