University of Groningen remains in top 100
The University of Groningen is standing its ground amidst tough international competition from other research universities by maintaining its place in the top 100 of the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) rankings. In the list published today, the University of Groningen now occupies 98th place, 9 places below last year’s 89th position. ‘I’m pleased that we managed to stay in the top 100 of this important worldwide list’, says Sibrand Poppema, President of the Board of the University. ‘It consolidates our international top position, which is important in terms of attracting students and academics from abroad, and acquiring research funding. ’
This is why Poppema thinks that a good position in the rankings should never be underestimated. The University of Groningen has shot up the THE rankings since 2010, when it attained 170th place. In 2011, the University rose to the 134th position, and last year it made a huge leap to number 89.
The University of Groningen has been in the top 100 of the three main rankings since September of this year. This puts the University in a select group of some 60 universities worldwide that can lay claim to the same achievement . A university’s place in the rankings is largely determined by its performance and international reputation. Six other Dutch universities join the University of Groningen in the top 100 of the THE rankings, making Dutch academia the third best in the world, after the United States and the United Kingdom.
