Open Day on Zernike Campus

Zpannend Zernike: 6 October
26 September 2013

On Sunday 6 October, the Zernike Campus in Groningen will turn the spotlights on science and technology. To mark Science Weekend, various knowledge institutes are opening their doors to the public between 12 noon and 5 p.m.

The overall theme is ‘treasure troves of science and technology’ and so the institutes have tried to find a unique way of introducing the public to their ‘treasures’. As is customary, the Kernfysisch Versneller Instituut (KVI), researchers from SRON, the Jouw Energie van Morgen truck (at the KVI) and the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the Bernoulliborg will be taking part in this scientific outing for all. EnTranCe, a hotspot for new energy applications, is a new element this year.

Energy hotspot EnTranCe

The energy hotspot operates as part of the Energy Academy Europe and will be opening its doors to the general public for the very first time. EnTranCe is an initiative of Hanze University of Applied Sciences Groningen in association with BAM, GasTerra, Gasunie and Imtech. Visitors can learn about a range of sustainable vehicles or take a guided tour of the research designs. Activities for children have been arranged too: make your own bike-powered smoothie or freshly pressed orange juice.

Klokhuis Discovery Weekend

Bart Meijer, presenter of the television programme Klokhuis, is guest of honour in the Bernoulliborg from 1 to 3 p.m. At 1 p.m. he will open the ‘ask away’ desk, where visitors can ask their questions to a panel of scientists. Ivo van Vulpen will deliver a lecture on the CERN at 3.15 p.m. Vulpen is appearing on Klokhuis TV later this year.

Children

There will be plenty of activities for children: build your own engine, solder, launch a water rocket, pass the Mars driving test, mini-lectures, make your own gel or shampoo and collect ‘treasures’ at every location. Two treasures entitle you to a treasure trove. All in all, there’s plenty to keep you busy at Zpannend Zernike!

KVI and SRON

The KVI will be hosting two lectures on subjects including proton therapy, and SRON will explain the latest developments in Dutch space research.

Programme

A complete overview of activities is available on www.zpannendzernike.nl . A shuttle bus will be available to take visitors from the transferium to the various locations.
