International students in the Netherlands put the University of Groningen at the top of the list. This has been revealed by a large-scale global satisfaction survey by Studyportals. The University is extremely happy with this result. ‘Internationalization is one of the University of Groningen’s strategic policy spearheads and an important instrument in improving quality, innovation and diversity. We are delighted that international students recognize this and value it so highly’, says Rector Magnificus Elmer Sterken.

The University of Groningen offers a wide, international curriculum, with over 80 English-taught Master’s degree programmes and PhD programmes, as well as 20 English-taught degree programmes at Bachelor’s level. The University of Groningen already has 4000 international students with over 120 different nationalities – we hope to reach 5000 international students in 2015. 20% of the staff and 60% of all PhD students are from abroad.

This year, the University is welcoming some 1500 international students. On Tuesday 27 August, the traditional Welcoming Ceremony was held in the Martinikerk. The University of Groningen Welcoming Ceremony has been voted the best in the Netherlands several times by foreign students, resulting in the University of Groningen being the most recommended Dutch university in the 2012 International Student Barometer.
