Title: “A Quasi-Simultaneous Interaction method for the Determination of Aerodynamic Forces on Wind Turbine Blades”

Abstract:

For the determination of aerodynamic forces on newly developed wind turbine blades, the widely used methods are not accurate enough. The increase in blade length requires also an increase in the accuracy of the numerical methods used for design.

An increase in accuracy can easily be achieved by adding viscous effects to the flow model used. In order to incorporate this, the computational domain is split into a viscous and an inviscid domain. An interaction method is needed to ‘glue’ these regions.

The quasi-simultaneous interaction method, developed by Veldman, is very suitable here. In this method the viscous region, modeled as a boundary layer, is solved simultaneously with an approximation of the external flow domain. The external domain, modeled as a potential flow, is calculated subsequently. This process is repeated until convergence is achieved.

The quasi-simultaneous interaction method is a very robust method which prevents the numerical singularity of the direct method to occur and it is very flexible in terms of changing flow models.

Simulations show that the method converges starting from scratch even for regions with large separation. The result of a simulation over a NACA0012 airfoil shows that the method yields an accurate result using very little computational power.
