'Science within Society' seminar

27 May 2013

On Thursday 30 May, the Science Shops of the University of Groningen are organizing an afternoon of presentations of socially focussed research, lectures and a debate. This seminar, entitled Science within Society, is open to everyone who wants to know what science can contribute to society.

Research close to home

The seminar will concentrate on research that touches our everyday lives – small-scale research close to home. This can be literally, for example gardens disappearing under tarmac or scenarios for Eelde Airport. It can also be research on reading circles, support for home carers or solutions for spelling problems in practical teaching.

Students will use over twenty attractive posters to present research being conducted at the request of social organizations. There will also be interesting speakers, including the King’s Commissioner Max van den Berg.

Questions from the audience

The seminar will also pay attention to the ‘400 Questions for the RUG’ event on the occasion of the University’s 400th anniversary next year. The audience will be challenged to think up questions for the University to answer in its anniversary year. You can of course always submit your question to a Science Shop. The seminar will start at 1 p.m. and will be held in the Harmonie Building, Oude Kijk in ’t Jatstraat 26.
