In this thesis the development of smart molecular systems is described. These smart systems consist of molecules that respond to a signal (e.g. light or an applied potential) by a change in material properties (e.g. colour or conductivity). This change is caused by a change at a molecular level, for instance a change in charge or structure.
Responsive systems are encountered in many forms. In this thesis, several approaches in the development of smart molecular systems are presented. The molecular design is only the first step of the challenge; the analysis of the material formed is equally important. In this thesis work a combination of techniques were used in the analysis of modified surfaces.
An important application of responsive materials is in the effect they can have on fluid flow through microfluidic channels, which are approximately the width of a hair (100 micrometers). The surfaces of the channel have a large effect on the flow profile that is observed, due to which, microchannels can be used as a tool to observe the effect of switching a responsive surface.
