University Colloquium with ING chairman Jan Hommen

22 February 2012

On Wednesday 22 February, ING chairman Jan Hommen will be the first prominent guest speaker at the new University Colloquium organized by the University of Groningen. Hommen will give a lecture that evening on ‘The Future of Banking’. Afterwards, three Groningen professors will react to the lecture from the standpoint of their academic disciplines. All staff and students of the University are warmly invited to attend the University Colloquium and join in the public discussion.

The Future of Banking

Rector Magnificus Elmer Sterken is enthusiastic about Hommen’s attendance: ‘I’ve got to know him not only as a thinker, but also as someone who is open to innovation. That is sure to make the discussion with the panel and the audience very interesting. The first University Colloquium is also about a very current topic. Just think of the current debate about undoing the BIM (Bank Insurance Model or bancassurance). There’s a growing call to differentiate between utility banking for private individuals and investment banking.’

University Colloquium

The University hopes to invite prominent speakers to Groningen twice a year. Sterken: ‘We will be approaching renowned people in the business world or academia for the University Colloquium who will be able to generate a lot of interest within our University. They will be notable people with an inspiring tale to tell. The firm intention is to breach faculty boundaries, and that’s the best part of the initiative as far as I’m concerned. The University Colloquium is primarily intended to unite University staff and students from various faculties. It’s the ideal opportunity for everyone to learn something new.’
