In Uganda the demand of blood by hospitals outstrips its supply. Therefore, Uganda Blood Transfusion Services faces the daunting challenge of making sufficient supplies of blood products while ensuring quality and safety of these products. National data on clinical use of blood are limited, but the baseline observations at the inception of this thesis identified issues like unnecessary transfusions, unsafe transfusion practices and errors (particularly at the patient’s bedside).
