Harry Garretsen appointed professor in International economics and business
02 September 2008

As of 1 September 2008, Harry Garretsen has been appointed professor at the faculty of Economics and Business. He holds the chair of International economics and business. Garretsen’s expertise focuses on the field of international economics, economic geography and multinationals.
He regularly contributes to the public discussion about the pros and cons of globalization in articles published in, for instance, Vrij Nederland, De Groene Amsterdammer and NRC Handelsblad. His role as co-author of two TV documentaries about economics for VPRO’s Noorderlicht and his membership of the editorial staff of Me Judice, the new on-line discussion forum for economists, underline his ambition not to be active among academic colleagues exclusively.
Curriculum vitae
J.H. (Harry) Garretsen (1962) graduated cum laude in economics at the University of Groningen. He obtained his doctorate under supervision of Simon Kuipers in 1991 with a thesis on the micro-funding of the macro-economy. After a short period as lecturer at the University of Groningen, he worked as a senior policy officer at the department of monetary and economic policy of De Nederlandsche Bank, as professor in economic theory and economic policy at the Radboud University of Nijmegen and, until recently, as professor in international economics at the University of Utrecht.
As a guest researcher, he stayed at the universities of Yale, Princeton and Munich, among others. Currently, he is a guest researcher at the university of Cambridge. He has been connected to various international journals as a (guest) editor. In addition, Garretsen is active for the Centraal Planbureau and is deputy Crown member of the Sociaal Economische Raad, an important governmental advisory body.
