Why Groningen?

  • Groningen is the youngest city of the Netherlands with around 50.000 students and an average age of 36.
  • Groningen is ideally located with only a 2 hour drive from Amsterdam, 4 hour drive from Brussels and almost 6 hour drive from Paris.

Why the Faculty of Arts?

  • We are internationally acclaimed for our research in the areas of Languages, Cultures and Archaeology.
  • We have a wide range of English taught programmes.
  • We receive over 300 exchange students from over 40 different countries each academic year.

Did you know that...

  • ... The Harmonie building is named after an old famous Groningen association: Sociëteit De Harmonie? It used to house a big concert hall which was renowned for its acoustics, as well as several lounges and a billiard room.

  • ... Aletta Jacobs was the first woman in the Netherlands to graduate from a university and that university was the UG?

  • ... Groningen offers various tranquil retreats? You can unwind in the gardens behind the Prinsenhof complex, have a picnic by the water in the Noorderplantsoen or relax amongst the greenery of the Heemtuin in the Stadspark.

  • ... There are also great spots to visit just outside town? You can climb the highest tower of Europe in Kardinge, have a beach day at the Hoornseplas or relax in a hammock at the Suikerterrein.

  • ... International’s have been in Groningen since 1614? 30 out of a total of 82 students who attended the UG in 1614 were from abroad - which is a much larger proportion of international students than today (30%)!

  • ... Groningen's nightlife has no closing time? It doesn’t matter what time you want to be on the dance floor, there is always a pub open in the entertainment city Groningen.

  • ... Groningen is a real cycling city? No less than 60% of all traffic movements is by bicycle!
