About Sophiane
Hey there! My name is Sophiane Munoz, and I am 24 years old. I'm currently in my first year of the Media Studies Bachelor, but I have been studying in Groningen for a couple of years. I am originally French but was born and raised in The Hague. In my free time, you can find me in the city center, walking around and enjoying the crowds. I also enjoy spending time on social media and listening to music.
Why Media Studies?
Before switching to Media Studies, I studied Psychology for about 6 years. I know it sounds like a long time to figure out what you really want to do, but it's actually the similarities between the two studies that drew me to Media Studies. I have always enjoyed media in all its forms, whether it's a book, movie, music, or thinking about what makes up an algorithm. Most of all, I've always wondered what makes people behave the way they do. I also always had a fascination with the internet and how it works the way it does. With Media Studies, you'll learn all about the history of media, as well as the key players involved in creating things like the Internet or the radio. I've also really enjoyed the variety of learning experiences. This study is yours, and you have room to make it your own and tailor it to your interests and strengths.
Why Groningen?
Already living in Groningen and having an established social circle played a big part in choosing to study Media Studies in Groningen. The longer I thought about it, the less I could imagine myself being a student in any other city. Groningen, despite being so far away from family, really feels like my home; the rhythm of life and atmosphere here is unlike anywhere else. Always being surrounded by the university and opportunities, all the while bumping into friends while out and about, makes it feel like the perfect mix between city and village life. Being able to bike or walk anywhere in this whole city also makes it so practical and enjoyable. The nightlife is also unbeatable, whether you’re going to a party organized by your association or want to sit in a cozy cafe and play games with friends, everything is possible here.
Future
As it is my first year, I haven’t really decided on plans just yet, but I look forward to all the opportunities coming, which will help me figure that out!
Golden Tip
Step out of your comfort zone. I know it sounds corny, but university is a great moment for you to experience and try new things. Whether that’s trying a new sport or switching studies. I would also highly recommend joining an association and going to an activity you think is fun, even if that means going alone because you don’t know anyone yet. Over my years here, I have met some of my closest friends by taking risks and doing things that seemed scary at the time!
