Lineke Adema

About Lineke
Hi! My name is Lineke, I’m 22 years old, and a student of the BA English Language and Culture, where I specialize in linguistics. Besides my studies, I’ve been involved in various extracurricular activities, like student co-governance, the study association NUTS, and other student associations. In my free time, I like watching films and series, hanging out with my friends, and reading.
Why English Language and Culture?
I chose to study English Language and Culture because English was my favourite subject in high school and I generally have a broad interest in language and literature. This made the programme a great fit, because you get to study linguistics, modern literature, and medieval literature. In years 2 and 3, you can pick and choose specific course units that fit your skills and interests, making the programme both diverse and personal.
Why Groningen?
I come from a small town in Friesland, so Groningen was the first city I considered when I had to choose where I wanted to go to university. The city is very lively and has a large student population, but still has a cosy feel to it. What I especially love is the diversity of student life here: there are so many associations and events that cater towards different interests, so you’ll always find someone with the same hobbies as you.
Future
I’m not sure yet what career options I’d like to pursue, since there are many different paths you can take due to the different disciplines and transferable skills you learn in the programme. I’d like to stay in Groningen and employ my skills in a meaningful way, either by continuing in academia or in another professional role.
Tip
I would definitely recommend to go to information days that are offered on location, like the Open Day and Student for a Day events. During these days, you have the opportunity to get a good feel for the city, university, and programme. Don’t hesitate to approach people like students or the study advisor: they are always happy to answer all your questions! Lastly, if you do decide on studying ELC, the study association is also a great way to get to know people from your programme.
