About Denisa

Hi! My name is Denisa, and I am in my third year of Media Studies. Originally from Romania, I have been living in Groningen for over 7 years. Choosing the diverse programme of Media Studies is not so much a surprise, considering the ever-growing number of my hobbies. Painting, crocheting, clay sculpting, reading etc. Name a hobby, I’ve probably done it. Creativity must surround me at all times.

When I am not helping the social media department of Cinema Politica Groningen, I like to research and engage in discussions regarding feminist or queer topics.

Why Groningen

I cannot remember why I came to Groningen in the first place, but I surely know why I chose to stay. Biking through the streets where brick buildings turn bright as they warm up in the sun. Walking through the Saturday market, listening to the uniform sound of people talking and laughing while standing in rows to exchange coins for goods. Reading in Noorderplantsoen, only to have my gaze stolen by ducks coming out of the water, stepping on the soft grass, making their way to steal my snacks.

Groningen is my chosen home.

Future

I’ve stressed about the future before, trying to plan every single second of it. Surprise, surprise, life does not work that way. I learned that it’s better to be ready to jump on the opportunities that come your way. I’ll plan what I can, such as following a masters programme after receiving my bachelor degree. During this time, I will be open to grab any related jobs or experiences that I will encounter along the way.

Why Media Studies

Before I allowed myself to discover who I really am, I studied Psychology. Ironically, in trying to understand how other people’s minds work, I discovered how mine doesn’t. I needed to work towards a creative career, where I can make a difference without suppressing who I really am. Media Studies fulfilled this need. This programme gave me the chance to take my various interests and analyse them through an academic perspective. Media Studies encourages you to step out of the box to find your unique interests and discover their depths. Media Studies helps you better understand the mechanisms of the world, and create some yourself.

Golden Tip

Reach out. Nobody expects you to know everything at first! And take time to do what you love. Allowing yourself to relax and do a hobby, will have a positive impact on your studies. I hope you will have as good of a time as I had!
