Space: Lifelong Learning Lounge

Merel Keijzer, Annemieke Mathijssen, and others

Does your brain get faster the more languages you can speak? And what is the best way to learn a new language anyway? Are multilinguals happier than monolinguals? Can multilingualism help keep your brain young? And how is learning a new language different from learning to play a musical instrument? This is wat Prof Merel Keijzer explores in her research at our faculty. She invites you to learn more about it in the Lifelong Learning Lounge.

Here, we take you through lifelong learning with language, as well as music. Learn the basics of sign language, take a mini-course in Spanish or German, go wild during the djembé workshop and experience for yourself what it does to you to learn something new.

In the Lounge, staff from the Hovo Seniors Academy will be happy to tell you more about lifelong learning and you can volunteer to join DenkTank 60+ (Think Tank 60+). Would you like to record how much you learned? Then have your photo taken in gown and beret and take home your memento for inspiration. After all, you never stop learning!

Flash lecture - Fitness for your brain

Flash lecture - Fitness for your brain

Can learning a new language help keep older brains flexible? And does learning a new language work better than, say, learning to play a musical instrument? Do healthy elderly people and elderly people with memory problems or mood disorders experience learning a new language differently? These questions underpinned a 5-year ongoing research project CogFlex. In this flash lecture, Merel Keijzer's research group presents its findings.

Please note: this flash lecture will be held in Dutch.

Thinking of Holland - Write a poem

In this workshop, you will learn how to write a poem that will appeal to a large audience. You will create what is known as a pastiche. What exactly is that? What should you pay attention to when creating a pastiche? What poetic means are at your disposal? This workshop is suitable for non-Dutch speakers and native speakers of Dutch. However, you must have a command of Dutch at least at B2-level.
