PhD & Postdoc Openings

There are currently three openings for research positions in areas related to Human-Centric AI.

PhD Knowledge-Infused AI for Human-Technology Integration (V24.0004)

This research focuses on synergies between humans and AI-enabled systems in complex decision-making scenarios, emphasizing the integration of knowledge representations such as ontologies and knowledge graphs. Neuro-symbolic learning is highlighted as a potent mechanism for knowledge-infused machine learning. The incorporation of domain knowledge necessitates a co-creative and evaluative approach involving multi-stakeholder teams. The research, situated within the European HumAIne project, seeks to develop multidisciplinary perspectives in linked data and knowledge-driven AI, emphasizing effective co-creative approaches. The Department of Operations at the University of Groningen leads this effort, collaborating with a diverse consortium. The role involves contributing to Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence research, engaging in impactful project activities, and representing the university in collaborative efforts. Supervised by Dr. Christos Emmanouilidis (promoter) and co-supervised by Dr. Sabine Waschull (co-promoter), the position also offers the possibility of international collaboration, including a double PhD degree with Politecnico di Milano, Italy, or co-supervision with the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

PhD position on Human-Centred Digital Twins in Industrial Work Environments (V24.0003)

This role centers on advancing Human-Centred Digital Twins within the context of the European AI4Work project, exploring the real-time integration of physical, digital, and human elements for improved operational control. Emphasizing the role of human operators, the research aims at achieving cognitive coupling between humans and machines, starting with the development of context models for situation awareness. The project seeks to define requirements, methods, and tools for a proposed framework facilitating collaborative work sharing between human and non-human actors, representing a substantial advancement in Digital Twins. Based in the Department of Operations at the University of Groningen, collaboration within a diverse consortium provides a multi-stakeholder perspective, involving technology providers, industry experts, and academic institutions. The position involves impactful research contributions to Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence (HCAI), participation in project activities and meetings, and engagement with external stakeholders. Supervised by Dr. Christos Emmanouilidis (promoter) and co-supervised by Dr. Jos Bokhorst (co-promoter), the role also offers potential international collaboration, including the option of a double PhD degree with Politecnico di Milano, Italy, or co-supervision with the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Post-doctoral researcher position on Human – Centric Artificial Intelligence (V24.0032)

This Post-Doctoral researcher position focuses on two key research areas: Knowledge-Infused Artificial Intelligence (HCAI) for human-technology integration and Human-Centred Digital Twins in industrial work environments. In the first context, the research emphasizes the effective integration of data and knowledge through ontologies, knowledge graphs, and neuro-symbolic learning. Collaboration with multi-stakeholder teams is essential, requiring a co-creative and evaluative approach to shape Knowledge-Infused Artificial Intelligence. The second area explores the development of Human-Centred Digital Twins, targeting the real-time operation of mixed physical-digital-human systems, emphasizing the role and contribution of human operators. The goal is to achieve cognitive coupling between humans and machines, beginning with context models for situation awareness. The appointed Post-Doctoral researcher will contribute to and lead project research, engage in technical reporting and dissemination activities, and conduct empirical investigations in machine learning. The role also involves supporting other researchers, especially PhD researchers in the same projects, and active participation in project meetings and workshops. This 24-month appointment is part of the European collaborative research projects HumAIne and AI4Work, addressing collective intelligence and decision support, as well as Human-Centric Digital Twins for improved working conditions. The collaborative nature of these projects involves technology providers, industry experts, academic institutions, and other organizations, ensuring a multi-stakeholder perspective.
