EcoMediaLab: A new interdisciplinary initiative for strategic communication for environmental action
Dr. Marc Esteve del Valle (Faculty of Arts, Center for Media and Journalism Studies) and Dr. Tommaso Caselli (Faculty of Arts, Center for Language and Cognition) have established the EcoMediaLab, an interdisciplinary research lab dedicated to promoting strategic communication for environmental action.
The lab’s current research focuses on critical areas such as climate misinformation, climate polarisation, the environmental impact of AI, Indigenous climate communication, and decarbonisation strategies. By integrating methods from Natural Language Processing with theoretical frameworks and practices from Media Studies, Argumentation Theory, and Network Analysis, EcoMediaLab adopts a uniquely interdisciplinary approach to address pressing environmental challenges.
Mission
The Digital Environmental Communication and Media Lab aims to advance research that strengthens strategic communication for environmental action. Collaborating across academia, civil society, media, government, and industry, the lab explores how online environmental information influences public understanding, engagement, and action on sustainability issues.
The lab is committed to scientific excellence, teamwork, fairness, diversity, inclusion, public engagement, and environmental stewardship. Its goal is to help create a world where communication, media, and data science empower people to make sustainable and well-informed choices.
