Michele Cucuzzella joins the Jantina Tammes School

Michele Cucuzzella, Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, joins the Jantina Tammes School and the Wubbo Ockels School to drive the Twin Transition. This transition is crucial in today’s world, where the digital and energy transitions are inextricably linked to the broader goal of addressing climate challenges. The twin transition emphasizes the convergence of digital technologies and energy systems to accelerate the shift toward sustainable energy solutions while ensuring that digital innovations are leveraged to improve efficiency, reduce emissions, and address climate change. At the Schools, we are committed to fostering interdisciplinary collaborations that explore how digital solutions can enhance energy transition efforts and vice versa.

Through collaborative and interdisciplinary research initiatives, we aim to bring together experts from various fields—ranging from digital technologies and AI to renewable energy and environmental science. Our goal is to explore innovative pathways to sustainability, engage students in cutting-edge research, and strengthen partnerships with industrial and societal stakeholders to align academic research with real-world challenges.

The twin transition theme stands at the intersection of two critical global transformations, making it an essential focus for both academic research and societal impact. I am excited to coordinate this initiative and contribute to creating a sustainable future through the combined power of digital and energy innovations.

Michele Cucuzzella is an Associate Professor at the Engineering and Technology institute Groningen (ENTEG), Faculty of Science and Engineering. He is also a visiting Associate Professor at the Hiroshima University, Japan. His research activities are mainly in the area of nonlinear control with application to the energy domain and smart complex systems.
