From Ethical Tension to Critical Thinking: Using Game-Based Learning to Develop Ethical Reasoning

Presented at the Education Festival 2026, University of Groningen, the poster below explores how UnExpected Values: The Free Market supports the development of ethical reasoning in speech technology education.

Through structured dilemma discussions based on real-world cases, students move from abstract views of ethics to actively analyzing trade-offs, assumptions, and consequences. The activity fosters critical thinking by encouraging perspective-taking and reflection on societal impacts. Students reported increased confidence in engaging with ethical issues and integrating them into their research design.
