Open pedagogy values: Transparency

Transparency ensures that the purpose of educational activities, expectations, and assessment practices are clear and accessible to all participants. It moves beyond simple content sharing to make the how and why of education visible—from clear assessment criteria and open learning objectives to the explicit acknowledgment of biases, values, and the constructed nature of knowledge. This creates accountable, trustworthy learning environments where all participants can see the reasoning behind decisions, critically engage with sources, and understand their own role within the educational system. Ultimately, transparency demystifies power structures and fosters trust by providing insight into the values inherent in education—revealing how knowledge is constructed and inviting critical reflection on how one’s own biases, beliefs, and values impact the teaching and learning dynamic.
