RUG participates again in the European TreeTag action day

Today, the University of Groningen (UG) equipped two remarkable trees in the city of Groningen with a TreeTag, an information board that highlights the ecological value of the tree. During the action day on September 18, multiple trees across Europe were fitted with such information tags. In Groningen, the RUG provided a Japanese ginkgo tree in the Hortus garden and a pin oak on the Zernike Campus with a visible testament to their ecological and societal importance.

Making the invisible contributions of trees visible

With this initiative, the UG joins a growing movement across the Netherlands and Europe, where hundreds of trees are tagged in a single day with information boards. These tags, made from sustainable stone paper, clearly display a tree’s contributions to its environment: from rainwater retention and oxygen production to filtering polluted air. This makes the invisible benefits of trees for a healthy living environment visible to everyone.

A visible contribution to a greener city

Two years ago, the UG also participated in the TreeTag action day. By taking part again, the university puts the spotlight on the trees across its campuses. The Japanese ginkgo tree in the Hortus Botanicus was chosen because it is the oldest of its kind in the Netherlands, while the pin oak on the Zernike Campus was selected due to its high foot traffic, ensuring that students, staff, and visitors become more aware of the value of urban greenery. The TreeTags will remain visible for years, reinforcing the message: trees are indispensable for a healthy and livable environment. Everyone is welcome to visit the tagged trees.
