New ACLO sports centre in Groningen to be built by Hegeman and BAM
The University of Groningen (UG), Hanze and the ACLO foundation have reached an important milestone in the development of the new, sustainable and multifunctional sports centre on the Zernike Campus. The construction works have been awarded to contractor Hegeman and BAM Integrale Projecten Noord. Construction will begin in the spring of 2026 on the north side of the current sports complex. By 2028, students will be able to use the new sports facilities.

Modern sports facilities
The construction works for the new ACLO sports centre have been awarded to Aannemingsbedrijf Hegeman. BAM Integrale Projecten Noord will handle the installation works. The new sports centre, covering approximately 12,500 m² of gross floor area, will offer a wide range of modern sports facilities. The design by AGS Architects focuses on sustainability, inclusivity, and an optimal user experience, with attention to acoustics, air circulation, and indoor climate.

Future vision
The new sports centre will not only be a modern and sustainable sports facility but also a meeting place for students and staff. 'As ACLO, we are proud to create a place with this new sports centre where everyone feels at home and where sports, relaxation, and connection are central,' says Roan Luning, chair of ACLO. 'With the new sports centre, we can better serve over 20,000 athletes and 49 student sports associations. This is a big step forward for the sports culture on campus.'
Start of construction and planning
The design plans have been finalised, and preparatory work to ready the site for construction has already begun on the north side of the current sports centre. Construction is expected to start in the spring of 2026, with the construction phase lasting approximately two years.
