Nijenborgh 4 relocation carousel successfully completed

24 November 2025

Over the past few years, Nijenborgh 4 (NB4) has undergone some major transformations. Many research groups have relocated to the Feringa Building, but some groups remained due to insufficient space in the new building. For these groups, the remaining sections 5114 and 5115 have been redeveloped in collaboration with the Real Estate department. Modern, functional and safe spaces have been created, fully suitable for high-quality education and research at the Faculty of Science and Engineering.

Modifications in sections 5114 and 5115

On the ground floor, space has been created for the ENTEG research institute, including a new 3D printing facility. The first floor now houses multiple laboratory rooms for physics education. The second and third floors have been equipped for chemistry laboratory education. Outdated fume hoods have been inspected, and the rooms have been fitted with the necessary ventilation systems. Additionally, a new distribution and collection point for chemicals and supplies has been established on the second floor, improving logistics and safety.

On the ground floor and first floor of section 5115, additional lecture halls have been set up.

Status of sections 5113 and 5116

Sections 5113 and 5116 have been emptied and taken out of service. They are sealed off with wooden barriers and may no longer be entered. Section 5113 is part of the University of Groningen's real estate plans for the development of an interfaculty education center. Sections 5114 and 5116 are also nominated for redevelopment.

Sustainability: connection to WarmteStad

This year, Nijenborgh 4 is connected to heating network of WarmteStad. For this transition, the existing heating installations were adapted to efficiently connect NB4 to the heating network. As a result, the building can be heated completely gas-free this winter, contributing significantly to the reduction of the University of Groningen's CO₂ emissions.

Result

With the new layout of NB4, the faculty has achieved improved facilities for education and research while simultaneously saving on energy, maintenance, and cleaning costs. This is further supported by the demolition of sections 5117-18 last year, making way for the construction of the second and final part of the Feringa Building.
