University of Groningen seeks architect for transformation Nijenborgh 4

The UG has the ambition to transform a number of building parts of Nijenborgh 4 on the Zernike Campus. This is because the building is outdated and a thorough makeover will allow for optimal research and education. Two building sections are currently being demolished to make room for phase 2 of the Feringa Building. The remaining building parts are eligible for transformation. However, the UG will start by transforming one building section.

Nijenborgh 4 has housed much of the Faculty of Science & Engineering's (FSE) research and education for decades. It is a distinctive 1960s building on the Zernike Campus that contributes to the identity of the area. A transformation of the building enhances the value of the site, makes a positive contribution to its surroundings and is a lot more sustainable than replacement.

Much of the research and teaching that took place in Nijenborgh 4 has already moved to the Feringa Building. This move has created space in Nijenborgh 4, making it possible to make this outdated building ready for the future. We opt for a phased transformation, starting with the first vacant building section.

Room for modern facilities

With the transformation, we expand the range of state-of-the-art educational facilities on the Zernike campus, partly for the our technical courses and because of the national Beethoven programme, aimed at training thousands more people for the semicon industry. The transformed part of Nijenborgh 4 should further accommodate high-tech research facilities and the technical workshop, for which there is no space in the Feringa Building. Finally, it should encourage cooperation between UG faculties and with other knowledge institutions, industry and consortia, and facilitate start-ups. In terms of both use and appearance, the building should make visible and support the UG's technical profile and the connection with the region. 

The UG is looking for an architect with a vision that matches the requirements for this area and building.
