How deep is the education gap?

Jaap Nieuwenhuis (Sociology, University of Groningen) and other researchers were interviewed about the growing gap between those with practical and theoretical education in the Netherlands, which is leading to declining trust, increasing polarization, and social tensions. Nieuwenhuis emphasizes that the emphasis on education as an explanation for social position masks the underlying economic inequality, while in reality wealth is very unevenly distributed and policy often changes little without concrete interventions. In the run-up to the Public Academy, solutions such as fair remuneration, more daily contact between groups, and mutual respect were discussed in order to restore social cohesion.
