PhD & EngD
Do you want to continue your academic career after obtaining your MSc degree? At the Faculty of Science and Engineering we have 2 options: EngD and PhD.
At our faculty, your research will be embedded in a research group. This means that you will not study alone, but be part of a group that is part of a larger research institute focussed on specific topics. Our frontline research groups explore innovative fields such as synthetic biology and sustainable energy use.
What is an EngD?
An EngD (Engineering Doctorate) is a 2 year programme where you combine studying with a practical experience in industry. We have programmes in high-tech and chemical industries that train you to become a designer who can solve technical challenges.
What is a PhD?
During a PhD, you pursue a 4 year research project. In this, you pursue fundamental questions, often combined with teaching classes to our students. While you will collaborate with partners from industry, the medical world or other realms of society, the goal is to establish yourself as an independent researcher.

FAQ
What is the difference between an EngD and PhD?
Both EngD and PhD programmes are post-master programmes where you deepen your technological knowledge. However, they differ in terms of focus.
Where a PhD aims to establish you as an independent researcher in the academic world, an EngD prepares you for a more applied use of the knowledge and for a position in industry. Moreover, a PhD-programme lasts 4 years and an EngD programme only 2 years.
