Language requirements

English-taught Bachelor’s programmes

Proficiency in English is an admission requirement for all English-taught degree programmes. You will need to submit proof of your proficiency in English as part of the application process.

Accepted tests

IELTS (Academic)

6.5 - minimum score of 6.0 on each section

TOEFL IBT (internet-based test)

92 - minimum score of 21 on each section

TOEFL CBT (computer-based test)

237 - minimum score of 21 on each section

TOEFL PBT (paper-based test)

580 - minimum score of 55 on each section

Cambridge English Qualifications General and higher education

Advanced (CAE) C1 Advanced
Proficiency (CPE)
C2 Proficiency

English language test - University of Groningen Language Centre

Minimum section scores C2 or C1 (one B2 allowed)

Please keep in mind

  • The test scores cannot be older than two years (except for the Cambridge certificates).
  • The modality required is 'academic'.
  • You may apply for a degree programme while you have not yet taken an English test or while your test score is still insufficient. Should you be admitted, then your admission will be conditional, with (one of) the condition(s) for final admission being that you take and pass a (new) test. Please inform the Admissions Office of the date on which you are planning to take such a test.
  • We do not accept institutional TOEFL tests.

Submission of test results

  • IELTS: a scan of the score report can be uploaded in the Online Admission System (OAS) or sent by email. We can verify the score online.
  • TOEFL: please upload a scan of your score report in OAS and submit a request with ETS to allow us to access your test results in the ETS online database (institution code 7191).
  • Cambridge Certificate: initially, a scan of the score report can be uploaded in OAS. Should you be admitted, we will need to receive a certified copy of the certificate.

Exemptions

You are exempted from proving your proficiency in English if you:

  • are a native speaker and have completed secondary education in one of the following countries: USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada;
  • have already completed a Bachelor’s programme in one of the following countries: USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia, Canada;
  • apply with at least 3 British A-level certificates;
  • have an International Baccalaureate, with English as the medium of instruction;
  • have a European Baccalaureate diploma, with English as final exam subject.
