1. Admission & Selection
Am I admissible?
Holders of the following Bachelor’s degrees from the University of Groningen are considered to have sufficient knowledge and skills and are admissible to the Master’s degree programme in Biomedical Sciences on that basis:
- a Bachelor’s degree in Biology with one of the following majors:
> Biomedical Sciences.
> Behavioural & Neurosciences
Students with a comparable Bachelor’s degree from another Dutch or foreign university, focusing on knowledge and skills at the interface of (human) physiology, genetics, molecular biology, neurology, biochemistry and/or behaviour, and medical sciences, may also qualify for admission.
Admission is always granted on an individual basis by the Admission Board.
Selection
For a selective programme like this, applicants are also checked for their academic performance and motivation. These will be assessed on the basis of your application file.
For detailed information on how the selection procedure is performed, please check the official documentation (Teaching and Exam Regulation, Appendix VI, paragraph 3)
This Master’s programme does NOT have a Numerus Fixus or limited intake: this means that every applicant fulfilling the admission & selection requirements will be admitted to the programme.
Pre-master (HBO)
A premaster may be offered to students with a Dutch Bachelor’s degree who have covered some but not all key subjects in their own degree. Also, students with a relevant HBO degree are not directly admissible but will be offered a premaster programme.
The master programme Biomedical Sciences offers a pre-master programme for excellent students from Universities of Applied Sciences. After fulfilling the requirements for the pre-master the student is automatically admitted to the master programme Biomedical Sciences. Admission to the pre-master is always granted on an individual basis by the Admission Board. The pre-master BMS consists of the following bachelor biology courses:

Pre-master (WO)
If you would like to follow a FSE Master’s degree programme that dovetails insufficiently with your Bachelor’s degree programme, the Admissions Board may decide that you will first have to complete a Pre-master’s programme. A Pre-master's programme (max. 60 ECTS) usually comprises a set of Bachelor’s course units. If you are going to follow a Pre-master’s programme, please note that:
-
All the course units followed in a Pre-master’s programme must be completed within one academic year. In practice this will mean, for example, that for each course unit that is concluded with an exam, there will be no more than two scheduled exam opportunities; the regular examination and one resit. You will not be able to start the Master’s degree programme if you fail these exams.
-
Statutory tuition fees do not apply to Pre-master’s programmes. Instead, you will have to pay a special Pre-master’s fee that is calculated per ECTS rather than per month of registration. More information about this can be found on this website.
Students Students with an academic BSc. degree in Psychology will be admitted to the Master Computational Cognitive Science after successfully completing following a 20 ECTS pre-master programme. This is programme is listed in Ocasys and is available as of 1 June.
Students with a relevant Dutch BSc. degree relating to Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive Science, Brain Science, Psychobiology etc. may be eligible for admission to the master, either unconditionally or after taking a pre-master programme (see below example). If you are interested in this possibility, please contact the academic advisor.
You apply by submitting an admission request.
After successfully finishing the Pre-master’s programme you can start the master programme in the following academic year.
Fast-Track (HBO)
A fast-track programme ('Doorstroomprogramma' in Dutch) is a study programme at the University of Groningen, that can be followed by an HBO-student as part of their HBO study programme. The programme is formally part of the HBO study programme, for example as elective course units or in the form of a minor programme. The goal of such a fast-track programme is to create a better connection between the bachelor and the master programme.
Please note: To be considered for a Fast-track programme, you must submit an admission request.
