Femke Janssen | Faces of FEB

The Faculty of Economics and Business is a faculty with great diversity of people. But who are these people? Within ‘Faces of FEB’ we talk to different students of the faculty and give a little peek into the world of these FEB students. Within the ‘summer break’ edition we talk about how students enjoyed their summer. This week Femke Janssen talks about how she experienced the past academic year and how she prepares for the coming.

Could you tell me a little bit about yourself?

Yes, I am Femke, 21 years old and originally I come from Zeist. Currently I am studying Business Administration with the track ‘Business and Management’. Compared to the accounting track, this is more about the marketing side of Business Administration. I am actually in my third year, but because of a little delay, this will be my fourth and hopefully the last year of my Bachelor.

How did you experience the past academic year?

At the beginning it was a matter of trying to adapt to the situation. When I was ready to take the exams, every academic activity was cancelled. Therefore, I had nothing to do for about 6 weeks. Recently we had the opportunity to catch up with the missed exams, so I really got my working drive back. Still I do miss going to Zernike and really being able to dedicate my time to studying, as I get more easily distracted these days.

Did you find any way to adapt?

For me it really depends on whether I can study out of home or not. Studying in my room is not ideal. Especially in the summer when it gets warm my room is not the place you want to be! Therefore, I really like to study at the Forum or at the Library. Also, finding study mates to study with, at a safe distance of course, really helps. This way you can motivate each other to keep busy.

Did you find a nice way to enjoy the holidays?

In June the weather was really good, however I still needed to study for the exams. This is why I gave myself a day off every now and then, so I could go outside and relax. This helped me to let go of study stress. Furthermore, I did go on a vacation for a while, to Italy.

That sounds great! Did you take any Corona precautions?

Yes, we went for a week. My parents really wanted our trip to be safe, so we hired a house in the middle of nowhere, where not many people would go. Also my mom took like thirty masks and many disinfectant sprays. We were really careful and stayed a lot near the house.

Are you ready for the coming semester? Any special preparations?

Yes, definitely. I think I will be a little bit more strict for myself with regard to planning. Last year I really had a routine: first I followed the lectures and after some time I went to the library with everyone to study for the upcoming exams. However, as we cannot have this routine anymore, I will still try to study with others outside home (on a safe distance), to be able to really dedicate my time to studying. Unfortunately I still need to take some resits this month, so the academic year has already started for me!

Do you have advice for people who also have resits this month?

I would say to find some students who are dealing with the same and try to motivate each other. These times are crazy and when you try to resist and do not do the work you need to do, then you will only push your problems to the near future, as you need to take the exams anyway. So just push through and make sure you do not have to deal with these exams when the corona situation is over.

Any plans for after your bachelor?

I want to do a master, but I am not sure which master yet. Anyway, I like Groningen so much that I want to stick around for a little longer!
