- Proof of Swiss Parentage: The applicant or one of his or her parents must be a Swiss national.
- Residency Requirement: Applicants must be USA residents, permanently domiciled in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania or Delaware for two years or more.
- Academic Standings: Applicants are in excellent academic standing (min. GPA 3.8) and show aptitude in their chosen fields of study.
This is a nonrenewable, one-time only scholarship award. The amount is paid in two installments to the recipient's school; at the start of the academic year, the fall semester, the other at the start of the spring semester.
Purposes: PhD students in Social Sciences with the highest cumulative Grade Point Average (3.8 min.)
Programmes: full-time PhD study (min. 12 credits) in college or graduate school

The Swiss Benevolent Society of New York (SBS), formerly known as "Zimmermann Scholarship", is the most significant Swiss charitable organization in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut tri-state area. It is a registered public 501(c)(3) not-for-profit and non-religious organization and has helped individuals, families and our Swiss community achieve positive change for over 175 years.

There is a non-refundable application fee of USD 75.00; this fee is due on March 31.
Email your application form together with the following documents to the Scholarship Committee by March 31:
- Proof of Swiss citizenship of applicant or one parent (copy of Swiss passport, copy of consulate recognition letter or similar);
- Proof of applicant’s U.S. citizenship or U.S. residency;
- Proof of SAT / ACT or GRE / GMAT results;
- Proof of cost for tuition, room and board (copy of bursar’s bill).
Also provide the following documents by April 30:
- Official transcripts of all high school, college and graduate grades (no copies); Electronic transcripts are only accepted if the Swiss Benevolent Society can download the transcripts from the university's website or if the sender is the respective school;
- Two current letters of reference from professors in the applicant’s major area of study, on official letterhead (no copies).
