Additional information

Eligible candidates:
  • are a citizen and legal permanent resident of an eligible country
  • have at least two years of conservation-related work or research experience
  • have a demonstrated commitment to working in academia in an eligible country
  • have an existing affiliation with a college or university in an eligible country
  • be enrolled in, admitted to, or have applied to a PhD program anywhere in the world
  • plan to begin your studies no later than January next year
  • commit to working for at least 2 years in your home country after the completion of your degree
  • have not received a Train Fellowship or Scholarship in the past
  • contact EFN if you are a WWF employee, consultant, or previous EFN grant recipient to determine eligibility

Priority will be given to individuals affiliated with underserved universities.

Train Fellows are selected through a competitive, merit-based process. An independent, interdisciplinary panel of experts will be convened to review applications and to identify the top candidates based on the following criteria:

  • professional qualifications
  • demonstrated leadership
  • academic achievement
  • commitment to conservation education in home country or region
  • potential impact of proposed research
Grant information:

Purposes: improving academic programs in conservation and to build local capacity in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Programmes: doctoral degree study in social science, natural science, and other conservation-related fields; after completing a doctoral degree, the individual must enhance, expand, or establish a graduate-level conservation program at a university in their home country.

Countries of origin: select countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America (eligible countries are listed at fellowship guidelines).

Grant information: In 2013 this fellowship was launched with the goal of improving academic programs in conservation. WWF aims to improve the capacity of local and regional universities, encourage future conservationists to study in their home countries, and ensure higher education opportunities are more equitable and accessible in the Global South. Applicants may apply for up to 3 years of funding and request up to USD 30,000 per year.
