Eligible candidates:

• must be accepted as a doctoral candidate at a German university at the time of application;

• must not have started a PhD more than 3 years ago at the time of application;

• must be doctoral students doing research at institutes of universities of applied sciences / universities of applied sciences (HAW / FH) with the right to award doctorates;

for applicants with doctoral projects in artistic subjects and architecture, special requirements apply (see: important scholarship information / Section A, 21); a medical doctorate can be funded for graduates after the 3rd section of the medical examination;

• must be cooperative doctoral candidates, provided that the cooperation takes place in cooperation with a German university with the right to award doctorates.

Grant information:

Purposes: for PhD students; aiming to promote the internationalization of German universities and research, strengthen German studies and the German language abroad, and support developing countries in building efficient universities.

For short-term visits of 1-12 months per application; 2 funding programs are possible for 18 months in total. This scholarship includes the following benefits:

  • travel allowance
  • insurances benefits
  • grant for any tuition fees incurred up to an upper limit
  • a monthly flat rate for research and congress costs of 102 euros
  • subsidy for a language course (national language or instruction or working language)
  • grant for trips in the host country that are directly related to the project

Scientific and technical qualification (documented by: university certificates, reports, list of publications, curriculum vitae, if applicable, a summary of the thesis):

• Study achievements and duration of study

• Scientific achievements after graduation (publications)

Quality of the research project (documented by: presentation of the doctoral project, schedule, reports, proof of contact, if necessary language certificate):

• Quality of the technical presentation of the project as well as the preparatory work

• Originality, timeliness and relevance of the project

• Justification of the stay abroad and the choice of the host university

• Feasibility and consistency of the work plan and schedule (analysis and evaluation steps, possibly language skills)

• Embedding the project in the overall doctoral project (content / time)

• Significance of the research project and the stay abroad for scientific and professional plans

External criteria (documented by: curriculum vitae, certificates, if applicable):

• External knowledge and skills (e.g. through professional or voluntary activities, involvement in academic self-administration, further training)

• Political, social, cultural, social or family (upbringing and care periods) commitment
