Chemical Monthly Fellowship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (MoChem)

Invitations are invited from young, highly qualified doctoral candidates working in all areas of chemistry who:

• are studying for their doctorate/PhD at an Austrian university;
• began their doctoral/PhD studies no longer than 3 years earlier (as per date of submission);
• anticipate requiring no longer than a further 12 months to complete their doctoral thesis.

• The fellowship supports completion of a doctoral thesis in the field of Chemistry; it is especially aimed at doctoral candidates who require funding for conducting research abroad.
• If the doctorate or PhD is completed before the end of the funding period, the time remaining can be used to prepare publications.
• Duration of the fellowship: 6 – 12 months.
• The level of funding amounts to Euro 10.000 gross.
• Applicants are entitled to apply for other (funded) positions. Notification of such applications and information on their outcome must be provided in writing to the Department of Fellowships and Awards of the Austrian Academy of Sciences immediately however.
• Fellowships can be taken up from the time the applicant has received notification of the award until the end of the given year.
• A copy of the completed doctoral thesis is to be submitted no later than 3 months after completion of the funding period.
• Fellows are also obliged to submit a paper to the journal Monatshefte für Chemie – Chemical Monthly within 18 months of completion of the funding period.
• Fellows who fail to adhere to the conditions of the fellowship due to their own fault are obliged to return the funding.

• The selection process for the fellowship takes approximately 2 months.
• Significant selection criteria are the applicants’ academic qualifications, the scholarly quality of the doctoral thesis project and, where applicable, demonstration of the necessity of the research stay abroad for the project’s completion.
• The award’s committee’s decision is final.
• As a rule, the awarding committee convenes in May/June to decide on to whom to award a fellowship. Applicants are informed of the committee’s decision in writing.
