From Italy to Groningen

For Riccardo, studying abroad was a goal he had set for himself early on. At 24 years old, originally from Italy, he is now pursuing a Master’s in Marketing Management at the University of Groningen.
When considering his options, Groningen quickly stood out

“I wanted to study abroad, and after some time searching, I chose Groningen,” he explains. “It’s a prestigious university, it didn’t require extra steps like the GMAT for my programme, and I read really good things about it.” The positive reviews from other students reassured him that this was the right choice.
To ease into student life, Riccardo joined the university’s welcoming ceremony and the orientation days at Zernike Campus. These events were valuable for getting familiar with the university buildings and meeting new peers, helping him settle into his new academic environment.
What appeals to Riccardo most about his programme is the balance between analysis and application. “I like how analytical the approach is: reasoning and motivations are always tackled scientifically, rather than taken as given,” he explains. “At the same time, I also appreciate how there are plenty of practical insights we are learning in the Marketing Master's.”
The experience is worth the effort. Alongside good academic quality, you will also have the possibility to enjoy a vibrant and young environment
The transition from studying in Italy to studying in the Netherlands came with challenges. Riccardo notes that the pace at UG is faster and more dynamic than what he was used to, which required an adjustment period. Over time, however, he found his rhythm, and with that, balance came confidence. The city of Groningen also plays an important role, with its youthful atmosphere, active student community, and international feel all contributing to a supportive environment for students adapting to something new.
Looking ahead..

Riccardo is still refining his exact career path. What he knows for sure is that he wants to work in the field of marketing, ideally focusing on branding and strategic marketing. The knowledge and skills he is gaining at UG give him the tools to take the first steps toward that ambition.
For Italian students who are considering making the move to Groningen, Riccardo has encouraging advice. The experience may feel demanding at first, but it is also rewarding: strong academics combined with life in a lively student city. As he puts it: “The experience is worth the effort. Alongside good academic quality, you will also have the possibility to enjoy a vibrant and young environment.”
