University card

You will receive the University card only once. The card remains valid throughout your entire study career. Your University card will expire when you deregister.


New students

What is an University card?

The University card is a plastic card in bank card format with a built-in chip. The card contains your photo, name and student number.

You will receive the University card once, which is valid for your entire study period. From the moment you have deregistered, you can no longer use the RUG card.

How do I apply for an University card?

To receive an University card, you must be fully enrolled as a student and upload a photo. After activating your UG account, you can upload a photo for the University card in the Student Portal.

How do I upload a photo for my University card?

You can only upload the photo if your University account is activated.

  1. Go to the Student Portal and log in with your student number (for example S1234567) and your password.
  2. Click on ‘UG Tools’ in the top blue bar.
  3. Select "Statement of enrolment and passport photo".

Now you can upload the photo for the UG student card.

What requirements must my photo meet?

The photo must meet the following requirements:

  • Your head is shown in full and faces towards the camera (portrait photo)
  • You are not wearing sunglasses, a hat, cap or other head covering (except head covering for religious reasons)
  • No other person or object may be visible
  • The photo is clear and of good quality
  • The photo has not been edited with filters or other effects
  • Maximum file size: 5 Mb • Photo format: JPG

Manual check photo

We manually check whether your photo meets the requirements. If your photo does not meet the above requirements, we may reject the photo and ask you to submit a new photo. Please note that this may delay the delivery of your University card.

When and where do I receive my University card?

Once you are fully registered, you will receive your University card at home or you will receive an email informing your where you can collect your University card. This depends on your correspondence address:

Dutch address

If you have a Dutch address, then you will receive your University card per post on your correspondence address. You can find and change your correspondence address in Studielink.


Foreign address

If you have a non-Dutch correspondence address, you wait until you receive an email informering about collecting your University card. After you have received the email, you make an appoinment online with the Student Information & Administration department to collect your University card.Keep in mind that you should be able to identify yourself when picking up your University card.

What can I use the University card for?

The University card can be used to:

  • print and copy
  • borrow books from the University Library
  • access the University Library
  • identify yourself when registering for and/or taking exams

How can I deposit money into my University card?

You can deposit money on your University card via myPrint. It is not possible to get a refund of the money you deposit on your University card. Even if you deregister at the University of Groningen.

Do I get a new University card every academic year?

No. The University card is issued once and is valid for your entire study period.

What can I use the University card for?

The University card can be used to:

  • print and copy
  • borrow books from the University Library
  • access the University Library
  • identify yourself when registering for and/or taking exams

How can I deposit money into my University card?

What should I do if my University card is lost or stolen?

If you have lost your University card or if you card has been stolen, you must:

Once your University card has been blocked, the card cannot be unblocked. In this case, you must apply for a new University card.

I need my University card to register with my student or sports association. Can I already get a statement of enrolment from the University?

A statement of enrolment can only be issued if you are officially registered.

Access to the University Library during exam period

During exam periods, the access gates in the University Library only work if you have an active University card.

Your University card does not work if:

  • your account is blocked, for example because you have not paid your tuition fees.
  • you are not enrolled at the University of Groningen.

In the above situations, you will be unable to use university facilities, including the University Library.

What should I do if my University card does not work?

University card malfunctions do not occur often. In most cases, it concerns a malfunction of the service you want to use.

For adequate handling, report the malfunction to the correct service:

  • Access to buildings and the University Library (UB)
  • Printing / copying: CIT Service Desk
  • If your card does not work on multiple devices/services, you can report this via MyTickets.
