Academic Year
The Academic year at the University of Groningen starts on the first Monday of September. The academic year is divided into 4 blocks of 10 weeks each. These blocks of 10 weeks include both teaching and exams. The first two blocks together form the winter semester; blocks 3 & 4 form the summer semester.

Starting in the 1st (winter) semester
- Incoming exchange students are always welcome to join the intro week hosted the week before the start of the semester
- We also organise an exchange welcome session with the exchange officer and exchange coordinator to officially welcome you to our faculty.
- Before the start of the academic year Leeuwarden Student City traditionally organizes the LEIP! Week. A week for all students to get to know the city of Leeuwarden and all your fellow students from both Campus Fryslân, as well as the other educational nstitutions in Leeuwarden. During four days you will become acquainted with everything Leeuwarden has to offer in terms of going out, sports, music, food and drinks. This activity is optional for exchange students.
- Opening of the Academic Year. On the first Tuesday of September, Campus Fryslân traditionally celebrates the Opening of the Academic Year with the Gemma Frisius lecture, words from our Dean, our Student Assessor, and our Faculty Council, as well as musical performances by our own students.
Starting in the 2nd (summer) semester
- We organise a exchange welcome session with the exchange officer and exchange coordinator to officially welcome you to our faculty and getting you acquainted with other students.
