And the winner is … Jana Heitkemper!

Every year the Groningen University Fund (GUF) hands out the GUF-100 awards to excellent students of all faculties. Every faculty nominates three candidates, of which the GUF jury chooses one winner.

In April students and lecturers had the opportunity to recommend candidates to the Campus Fryslân GUF-committee, which resulted in 8 recommendations. In total 6 of these students applied for the award by sending a motivation letter and CV. The Campus Fryslân GUF-committee selected the following students as the top 3:

The jury indicated that they were very impressed by all of our candidates.

The awards consist of a scholarship for study or research worth € 2.500. In her motivation letter Jana describes what she would do with the money. During her studies she has become very passionate about programming and therefore, she would like to use the scholarship to progress further in this field, for example by participating in a summer school in Computer Science. Additionally, she would like to connect the area of programming to sustainability by empowering other students, especially women, to pursue programming and making it more approachable to them. Django Girls is an organisation that organises free, one-day programming workshops and she would love to make it possible to organise one of these workshops at our faculty.

Jana: "In our GRL programme, we aim to shape the world to be a more sustainable place. Throughout my study, I have discovered my passion for programming and have been trying to incorporate it in my study with extracurriculars or extra courses. I am really honoured to have received this year’s GUF-100 award and I am grateful that I have been given the chance to explore how programming can help build a more sustainable and inclusive future."
